Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Basilique-Cathédrale de Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Catedral de Sant Joan Baptista de Perpinyà
France, Perpignan
The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic cathedral and national monument of France located in the city of Perpignan in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1324 by King Sancho of Majorca and was completed in the 15th century. It was first the seat of the Bishop of Elna and then, from 1602, of the Bishop of Perpignan-Elne.
The cathedral was built in the Catalan Gothic style, as it was built on the territory of the Kingdom of Mallorca. It has a wide nave (length 80 meters, width 18 meters and height 26 meters), consisting of seven cross vaults, a short transept and an apse.
The western façade of the cathedral was never completed. During the restoration in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Gothic window of the facade was rebuilt, as it had previously been replaced by a simple rectangular opening. The façade also has a portico and a clock tower, which date back to the 18th century.

The cathedral is located in the historical center of the city. This is a Gothic temple built in 1324-1509. It is very simple from the outside, but when you step inside, you are amazed at the well-preserved, rich furnishings. As the main cathedral of the city, it replaced the old Romanesque church, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is currently connected by a passage (closed) to the cathedral on the north side. In the cathedral you can see the altar barrier (16th century), a stone font of the Romanesque period, an organ (16th century), the burial of King Sancho, neo-Gothic stained glass windows (19th century).
