Old harbor of Honfleur

Vieux Bassin
France, Honfleur
Vieux Bassin - The old harbor of Honfleur, located in the heart of the city, is famous for its characteristic tall, narrow houses of all colors that overlook the pier on three sides. It is the most photographed part of this port city!

The ensemble formed by Vieux Bassin is the most striking when you first visit Honfleur.
Initially, the port on this site was founded by the Vikings. It was a small cleared part of the coast. In its modern form, the harbor began to be created in 1681. The expansion of the port required the destruction of the western part of the ramparts protecting the city.
The modern harbor is bordered by buildings of two different styles: large stone houses on the south side (the Lieutenant's house, the quai and Sainte-Ethier church) and tall and picturesque narrow wooden houses in the north (quai Sainte-Catherine - quai Sainte-Catherine).
An interesting fact - in the 17th century, Samuel de Champlain sailed from Vieux Bassin, who founded Canadian Quebec.
Another interesting fact. The top floors of the tightly packed houses on the Quai Sainte-Catherine look back onto rue du Dauphin and rue des Logettes. Therefore, almost all houses have two different owners. These houses are very narrow because they were built at the crossroads of the city's old ditches, on land owned by Vicomté d´Auge, who founded the city around 1630. Most of the houses date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, some of them are rounded, many are made of slate. There are older houses from the 16th century on the side of the Lieutenant's House.
The largest ships that called at the port of Honfleur were the English three-masted sailing ship Aneroïd, the Italian three-masted sailing ship Nostra-Madre and the English passenger ship Newsleydale with a draft of 5.3 m.

This is the most popular place in Honfleur (the city is visited by 3.5 million tourists a year). Around the harbor, along the perimeter, there are interesting outwardly historical houses (colombage or half-timbered style). In the second half of the 17th century, the fortifications on the western side of Honfleur were demolished, which really interfered with the growth of the city. That is why buildings of different styles surround the harbor: large stone houses on the south side along the Saint-É tienne quai and tall, narrow wooden houses on the north side along the Saint-Catherine quai.
