The name of the quarter, according to one version, comes from a sign with a picture of a basket on one of the inns (translated from French "panier" means basket). According to another version, the quarter with its intricate narrow streets, going up and down, really resembles a basket. The area has an extremely dramatic history. During the occupation of the city by German troops, resistance fighters hid here. In January 1943, the German occupation authorities decided to blow up the area. About 30 thousand people were deported, thousands were sent to concentration camps, and most of the houses were destroyed .→
