On the coast of the English Channel near the city of Etretat there are picturesque coastal cliffs that form numerous natural arches.
These steep chalk cliffs up to 90 meters high amaze with their appearance. Many famous creative people drew their inspiration here.
The artists Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse visited here. Etretat was visited by the writers Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas and Guy de Maupassant, who spent all his childhood here.
The cliffs of Etretat are located in northern France in the region of Upper Normandy between the mouths of the rivers Seine and Somme.
In fact, the Etretat Rocks are part of the so-called Alabaster coast of the English Channel, which is about 140 kilometers long.
There are also chalk mountains on the opposite English shore of the strait, which are called the White Cliffs of Dover.
Among the rocks of Etretat are three particularly impressive ones that have personal names - Porte d'Aval, Porte d'Amont and Manneport (the largest of all).
Etretat Beach is also located in this area - a picturesque pebble beach about 1100 meters long between the D'Amont and D'Aval arches in the northern part of the city of Etretat.

The most picturesque coast of Normandy
This is the most beautiful place on the Alabaster Coast of France. The height of the rocks in the area of ​ ​ the city of Etretat is a little more than 80 meters. Water gradually dissolves the limestone from which the sheer cliffs are composed, due to which bizarre ledges and arches were formed. Two of the three famous arches are visible from the town: Porte d'Aval and Porte d'Amont. The third and largest arch, Manneporte, is not visible from the town, you have to go to it. Since the 19th century this place has become very popular among artists and writers.→
