Bridge of the Legions

Legia Bridge
Czech republic, Prague
The bridge is located in the center of Prague, it "connects" the National Theater with the Petrin Gardens across the Vltava River. The bridge of the Legions got its name in honor of the volunteer military units that participated in the First World War. The stone bridge with nine arched spans and a width of more than 16 meters was built at the very beginning of the 20th century. The authors of the project were Czech architects Antonin Balshanek, Josef Jan and Jiří Soukup. The architectural object received its current name in 1918 (until that time it was called the Franz Joseph I Bridge, the Austrian emperor and Bohemian king). During the Nazi occupation, the Bridge of the Legions was renamed the Bridge of Smetana, the famous Czech composer Bedrich Smetana. After the end of World War II, the bridge returned to its pre-war name. However, in 1960 it was renamed again, this time in the Soviet style - the First May Bridge. And only in 1989 he returned his traditional name.
