The fate of the church of the Scottish monastery (Schottenkirche) was difficult. The first Romanesque church at the Schottenstift monastery was built in 1160-99. The church burned down in 1276. In 1443, after the restoration, it was again affected by the elements - was destroyed by an earthquake. Due to the mistakes of the builders in the spring of 1634 the roof of the church collapsed. In 1638 the bell tower was destroyed by lightning. A new Baroque reconstruction was completed in 1641, but the church was damaged again during the Turkish siege.
