The fate of the church of the Scottish monastery (Schottenkirche) was difficult. The first Romanesque church at the Schottenstift monastery was built in 1160-99. The church burned down in 1276. In 1443, after the restoration, it was again affected by the elements - was destroyed by an earthquake. Due to the mistakes of the builders in the spring of 1634 the roof of the church collapsed. In 1638 the bell tower was destroyed by lightning. A new Baroque reconstruction was completed in 1641, but the church was damaged again during the Turkish siege.
The church building looks modest. The brighter the impression made by its interior. The interior of the Schottenkirche is decorated in a high baroque style and is surprisingly beautiful. There are several chapels in the temple. The main throne was created in 1883-89, according to the sketches of Heinrich Ferstel (in its decor used glass mosaics by Michael Rize). The altar was made by Joachim Zandrart. The altar painting was made by Josef Straka - a famous religious painter who studied in Italy.
The painting of the vaults belongs to the brush of the Austrian painter Julius Schmidt. On the south side of the outer wall of the church is a monument to Henry II Jazomirgott, founder of the Scottish monastery.
