Should I take fins and a mask or is it not customary to swim with a mask?

I'm going for the week of July 18th. I'm not going on a ticket, but on an invitation to visit. What to bring? I'm going alone. I love to snorkel, but will it be possible to see something in the rocks near the city beaches? I don't know English at all. Will it be possible to buy excursions in Russian somewhere?
