Having two higher historical and philological educations, I knew the translation "inshallah" (for all the will of the Lord), of course, for a long time. But the real meaning of it began to be understood only many decades later, when I got to Morocco with a tourist group. And this meaning is connected more with a sad note than with a cheerful one.
And now specifically about "Inshallah". Morocco is both a poor and a rich country at the same time. Rich, because their bauxites are exported all over the world (including Russia). Fertile soil, lush forests, thousands of miles of fish-rich ocean shores. And at the same time, perhaps the poorest African country, where the salary of an ordinary person does not exceed two hundred euros per month (according to some reports, even a hundred). Why aren't you looking for a better paying job? "Inshallah, God has commanded so. " More than 60 percent of the population is illiterate, especially men. Why don't you study? "Inshallah". The vast majority of women do not work. Yes, and how to go to work officially if you need to pull out ten children (such is the usual composition of a family in Morocco). Why so many children, it is impossible to support them. "Inshallah". Moreover, many men do not even work at home. We go by bus through settlements. On both sides of the road, both elderly and young able-bodied men sit on benches in the shade. They don't play anything, not checkers, not dominoes, not even backgammon. They just sit and stare blankly at passers-by and passing cars. Yes, they do drink tea. It is likely with narcotic weed to make you less hungry. At home, it's all the same a rolling ball. Why don't you work? "Inshallah". But at least a little food is still needed, who feeds? It turns out that children who have left to work in other cities and countries send money to support idlers. This is the Moroccan mentality - inshallah.
And in no case can we say that they are lost, bad people. Quite the opposite: very respectful and kind. Whenever you ask for something, especially if you get lost, lagged behind the group, they will make every effort to understand what is needed. And having understood, they will tell and show everything in the best possible way, even lead to the right place. So what's the deal? And the fact that the Moroccans really have in their blood the many thousands of years old mentality of nomads, for whom, as they say, the blessings of life and especially the achievements of European civilization have always been up to the lantern. "Inshallah, God gave - God took, for all the will of God! ".
But no. One of the "achievements of civilization" stuck to them with extraordinary ease. Once at 12 am I woke up from the roar of car engines in terms of power not inferior to aviation ones. Everything is clear: the “majors” are having fun. On the street, separated from our hotel almost a kilometer. But even here one could forget about sleep. We're fine, just one night. And what is it like for local, permanent residents, especially right next to the highway, so to speak, within walking distance. Why don't they protest, why don't they fight? Obviously, again "Inshallah". That is what the Lord ordered. Yes, the country is poor. But here, too, the rich, as elsewhere, turned out to be enough. Roared until five thirty in the morning. Why from 12, it’s clear: the restaurants closed. But why until five thirty? You won't guess anything. Because it is at this time that the mullahs from numerous minarets (most likely, loudspeaker recordings) sing their dull songs on one note. To compete with the mullahs (even if in the record), the "majors", obviously, do not dare. Anyway, for now.
God, Motherland, King
The king among the people immediately after God and the Motherland. And this is far from accidental. Why, for example, the Moroccans did not disappear from the face of the earth like many other even very developed peoples? Or, perhaps, indeed, God gave these former nomads not only unsurpassed pride in their Fatherland and indestructible love of freedom. But he also gave smart overlords. After all, almost all of not only the former highly developed civilizations, but also the current successful empires tried to swallow this tidbit of northwest Africa. Sometimes they even seized separate cities for a while. But sooner or later (rather sooner) absolutely all the conquerors got, as they say, in the teeth. Morocco has risen again and again like a phoenix from the ashes. Under the banner and leadership of the kings. And this, it seems, is the main asset and wealth that God gave to the long-suffering Moroccans.
God, Motherland, King. It is these three words that are lined with large stones on many slopes along the roads. God and Motherland - this is understandable. But where is the King? And despite the fact that in the most critical times for the country there were leaders (who then became kings), who rallied the people and repulsed the conquerors.
It's like in Russia: Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Minin and Pozharsky, and finally, today - Putin. Under their leadership, Russia, like Morocco (by the way, these countries are in many ways similar even in fate), was reborn from the ashes again and again. Although whoever did not try to destroy Russia: the Tatars, the Teutonic Knights, the Swedes, the French, the Germans, even the Japanese, and especially today the American moneybags and rabid Goldwaters. But, as our classic said, "Russia is great and plentiful. " So, whoever tries to swallow it will still choke. And Morocco is really a small and poor country, it is much more difficult for it. So thanks to the Moroccan rulers, they managed to survive and win with the people. Today's Alauit dynasty, especially its last representatives, father and son, have already swung at the main thing: to civilize the country, bring it to the forefront in the world, but for now at least on the African continent. Father Hasan 2 held general elections for parliament for the first time in the history of the country. For the first time, although on the second attempt, the Constitution was promulgated under him. Hassan 2 was a tough ruler, he wanted to civilize the country as quickly as possible in the image and likeness of European states. What did not like the senior generals and the clergy, who had become hardened in inertia. They even staged two assassination attempts on their king. True, unsuccessful. Apparently, indeed, "inshallah" - God did not allow this. The successor of his father, the son of His Majesty King Mohammed 6 behaved smarter and did not force things. By the way, his higher political and economic education probably contributed to this.
Remember Krylov's fable about the old and young horses lowering their carts with pots down the mountain. As already mentioned, Russia and Morocco are very similar both in fate and in spirit. But their first faces are also very similar to each other. Muhammad 6 came to power almost simultaneously with Putin. Perhaps he took into account the experience of Russia and also how Putin drove his cart carefully. By the way, both of these leaders have a lot in common in character. No wonder they ended up becoming friends. Putin was visiting Morocco, Mohammed 6 came to Russia even twice. And both achieved high and visible results. I won’t talk about ours, the Russians know them as well as I do. But what Muhammad 6 achieved is interesting.
Most importantly, on the sly, almost without annoying anyone, he brought a woman out of many thousands of years of slavery. Now she has received the same social rights in society as a man. If earlier it was worth the husband three times (even in a row without stopping) to say: “Go away, ” as the wife had to immediately leave the house without anything, leaving the children to her husband. The wife herself can file for divorce, and for the division of property, and even for alimony for the maintenance of children who remain with the mother. For the first time, a woman was appointed to the post of ambassador in one of the countries, an example for Morocco comparable only to space flight (which, with the help of Russia, is also possible in the near future). King Mohammed 6 (of course, in close cooperation with the government and the clergy controlled by it), among other things, carried out a lot of economic reforms. Including, say, such two seemingly insignificant facts. For example, when a calf is born to the owner's cow, the state pays 400 euros (recall, the salary of a laborer does not exceed 200 euros). The owner, who has expressed a desire to cultivate the land, is given 40.000 euros free of charge for the purchase of equipment. On the scale of Morocco, huge money. And here's something even more significant. A specialist with a higher education is sometimes paid ten times more than an illiterate one. Etc. etc. in the same vein.
That's how your obedient servant got a little acquainted with such an certainly interesting country as Morocco. And even with today's its King. Who is called in the country the King of the poor and the poor, the King of the people.
