Walk in Rhodes - Rhodes and Rodini Park
On one of the cloudy days, it was decided that it was time to visit the capital of the island. The capital of Rhodes is the city of the same name, it is located in the northeastern tip of the island and is washed by two seas: the Aegean on the western side and the Mediterranean on the eastern side.
It was decided to combine a visit to Rhodes with Rodini Park, which is located on the territory of the new city of Rhodes, 3 km from the city center. Rodini Park is famous for its coolness, which is created by the shade of mighty trees such as cypress and pine, as well as for its calm atmosphere.
Entering the park, we were its only visitors and immediately felt its coolness and freshness. Rodini Park is a river with artificial rapids and dams running along the bottom of the canyon. There are practically no people here. But there is a riot of flowers and greenery, a huge number of turtles, fearless carps the size of an elbow, an incredible number of peacocks, swans and ducks. Together with overgrown paths, dilapidated bridges and entrances to the dungeons hiding in the bushes, the park creates an incredibly mysterious atmosphere of some mysterious place in the jungle.
Having rested in the park, we went to explore the streets of the new city, while moving towards the main goal - the Old City.
The old city of Rhodes is surrounded by city walls with a total length of over 4 km, built in the 15th century. Here, the Medieval Knights Street, ancient buildings, narrow crooked streets, Orthodox and Catholic churches, a synagogue and Turkish mosques are well preserved.
The main attraction of the capital of the island is the port of Mandraki.
Two bronze statues of deer are the emblem of modern Rhodes.
Of course, having arrived in Rhodes for one day, like us, it is difficult to count on a detailed inspection of all the historical sights of the city. It is better to just relax and take a walk along its ancient streets and take a look around.
Rhodes is a city of knights and everything here reminds of them - the fortress, streets and palaces of the city.
We wander aimlessly through the old streets and get to the main square of the old city with a fountain. Here you can always see pigeons drinking water from the fountain. This is one of the visiting cards of the city.
Beyond the walls of the Fortress is no less interesting. The sea is very close! It feels like you are walking from one fairy tale to another. Here the locals fish and swim. Huge cruise ships are moored for a day or two to enjoy the city.
