The village of Adele near Rethymno was chosen as the area of the settlement. We decided that the western part is more picturesque and more excursions will take place there.
We liked everything about the hotel, except for the room. The hotel is an old building and, despite the restoration, it makes itself felt. There is no overhead light in the room as a phenomenon, a stone bed, stone bedside tables, tiles on the floor and a shower curtain, it smells of bleach. Strong association with the hospital ward. But to spend the night is enough.
Otherwise, the hotel is wonderful: a small green area, the first line of the sea, friendly staff, bus stops nearby in both directions, across the road there are many taverns and supermarkets, car rental offices and travel agencies. In other villages, we saw wastelands, construction sites and an industrial zone. There was no animation, maybe because there were few people. The food is delicious, everything is fresh: breakfast - buns, cereals, dried fruits, cuts, jams, salads, sausages, three types of eggs (boiled, fried eggs, scrambled eggs); dinner - meat dishes, side dishes, sauces, salads, sweet table.
Dinner for two was about 20 euros without alcohol. Lunch in Chania with a fish mix cost 40 euros. There are special offers in taverns for two: from 14 to 17 euros. Prices: Greek Salad - 3.70-5 euros, moussaka - 6 euros, fish mix - 18 euros, beer - 2.20-3 euros, frappe - 1.50-2.50 euros, gyros - 8 euros, pizza - 7-12 euros. Portions are huge.
It is very convenient to call from a machine by purchasing a Phonotel card for 5 euros.
On the card 60 minutes for a conversation with Kyiv.
Bus service is cheap, clear but difficult to understand. Tickets can be bought at stations, at the hotel, from conductors, at kiosks. Special buses are delivered to hotels, if it is interregional, it will not stop at the hotel on demand, even if it is on the road. Buses depart on time, and may even leave earlier. From the regional center you can get to the villages of your region or another regional center. For example, from Heraklion we had to go to Rethymnon, and then only return to Adela. Tickets to Rethymno from Adele (7km) cost 1.20 euros, to Heraklion - 6 euros.
Tours. General useful information:
1. Excursions from local travel agencies are two times cheaper than from a guide, and the same comfortable buses, the same routes, and the guides are sometimes even better. An excursion to Prevelli for two cost 46 euros from a travel agency, while for a guide it was the price for one.
Excursion to Samaria costs 27 euros per person. A trip to Santorini for two days with accommodation in a two-star hotel in Fira and breakfast cost 226 euros.
2. All excursions (with the possible exception of the Knossos Palace) are difficult for children. On mountain serpentines, you get sick, despite comfortable buses, the same thing on water boats and long walks in the sun. Even from the beach of Prevelli, the guide had to carry two kids in turn upstairs.
3. On any excursion you will need comfortable shoes, a hat, goggles and motion sickness pills.
4. On the west coast, you are unlikely to be offered excursions to the east (Lassithi Plateau, Vai Beach) and vice versa. So choose the direction in which the sights are most interesting to you.
5. If you are not by car, independent travel by bus is difficult and expensive, except for the Palace of Knossos.
Prevelli. Very nice place, but the sea is cold.
Cold currents flow near those places. There are many palms. The descent to the beach from the parking lot on the stairs from the mountain and the ascent back is difficult.
Chania and surroundings. For two 46 euros. Our friends really liked the Cognitive and rich excursions around the city of Chania and the surrounding villages with a stop at the olive oil factories.
Knossos. Buses from the bus station in Heraklion depart every 10-20 minutes. The ticket costs about 1 euro, the entrance ticket to the museum is 6 euros.
Aquapark. water city. Excursion with a transfer from the hotel for two - 76 euros, including entrance. Entrance ticket for adults - 21 euros, children - 15 euros. The water park has a safe, showers, changing cabins.
Samaria. It's hard to get through in the summer. Heat - 35 in the shade, at the same time the gorge passes 1500 - 2000 people. The best time to visit is May-October. The passage is not as difficult as they say. There are 3 large stops along the way and smaller ones with a water source and a toilet.
Sports shoes, sun cream and a hat are a must, fruit and water are a must. It's cold in the mountains in the morning.
Santorini. The best speedboat is the Sea Runner. There is an open area where, in case of motion sickness, you can go out to breathe fresh air. We didn’t have this on Flying Cat, so half of the boat was in the toilet. Of course, this island is worth going and seeing. Iya is a toy, white in a blue halo from the sky and the sea. Going to the volcano is interesting, swimming in the springs is dumb: the water is rusty and not so warm - +18. A ticket for the funicular costs 4 euros, we did not dare to ride on donkeys. If you do not forget about the siesta, in two days you can have time to go to the black sands, and on a short excursion to the volcano, and take a walk, watch the sunset in Oia.
