Each of us must see Youlupukki at least once. It is best to recover from him in the winter, at this time he is always there and gives gifts. It is necessary to go to Vuokatti, here you can not only see the Finnish Santa, but also have a good rest with the whole family, gain strength and inspiration for the whole year ahead!

Vuokatti Resort is located in central Finland at the crossroads of the lake and Lapland. Helsinki and Vuokatti, the capital of Finland, are 570 kilometers away, and only 35 kilometers from Vuokatti is the capital of Kainuu, Kajaani, with air and rail connections. Vuokatti Resort is also part of the municipality of Sotkamo.

Based on our own experience, we recommend that Vuokatti be sure to do the following ten things:

1. Learn to drive a dog sled.

The feeling of complete union with nature overwhelms anyone who drives a dog sled, driving through a snowy forest or lake covered with a thick layer of ice and dusted with snow. Depending on the size of the sled, there may be five to ten husky dogs in the sled. The leading dog is usually the smartest. That's right, dogs are also smart and stupid. Although it will take a lot of practice to achieve the skills of dog sled management, as in Mick Hackinen's Formula 1, basic driving skills can be acquired even on the first trip. The main thing is to "make friends" with dogs before the trip, and experienced instructors are sure to teach the secrets of management. If you consider yourself lucky, go on a sleigh ride under cover of night through the Vuokatti hills in search of the northern lights. It's worth it, because the impressions of what you saw will be remembered for a lifetime.

It is known that the Japanese fly through thirty-nine lands to Finland just to see the northern lights and conceive offspring - then they are believed to have a boy. It is said that twin boys are born to tourists (and not only from the country of the Rising Sun) who saw the northern lights in Vuokatti! And even triplets! It is rumored that last year the happy Japanese couple even named their long-awaited firstborn Finnish names - Esa, Arto and Yari.

2. Snowmobiling through the snow-covered and forested Vuokatti Hills . If you haven't ridden a snowmobile, you haven't been to Vuokatti! Motosani have long been part of the daily lives of northerners and are considered the most popular winter mode of transport. On them it is very convenient to recover in the winter on a farm of husky dogs or fishing in those places where the fish is just waiting to be caught.

Or just take a breeze ride through the snow-covered forest, maneuvering between the trees. Many amazing pictures of winter landscapes can be taken on a camera or mobile phone while riding a snowmobile on the Vuokatti hills in daylight. On the way you can stop not only to take another shot, but also have a snack and a cup of hot coffee in one of the local cafes located right in the woods. It is not necessary to drive a snowmobile, you can enjoy the local scenery and as a passenger.

3. Enjoy skiing. Undoubtedly, Vuokatti is one of the best ski resorts in Finland. Both foreigners and Finns like to come here to go skiing. For skiers there are thirteen trails of varying difficulty, including two for children. There is a superpipe and a street for snowboarders.

You are a beginner or a pro - everyone will find a route to their liking. Everything is fine with the lifts, there are nine of them: two chairlifts, three anchors, two ski lifts and an escalator. Skis, ski boards and all necessary equipment can be rented on site. If you are just starting to skate, use the services of an instructor. From my own experience I can say: "from scratch" after two hours of skiing training confidently skated on the slope of the initial difficulty. By the way, here is the oldest ski school in Finland, which has raised more than one champion. Knowing this, China sends here to train its best athletes. This is especially noticeable at lunchtime in the canteen of the sports school, which is located near the ski slopes and is popular with all skiers.

4. Dance on one of the best dance floors in Finland - Inscription.

On a hill above the lake in the woods near Vuokatti is the Inscription, a favorite place for Finnish pop artists and one of the best dance floors in the country. Finns from all over the district come to listen to music and dance. This place is so popular that some people get here after spending several hours on the road. Here you can see the unique part of Finnish culture (tradition), which is not written about in the guides. Despite the large enough parking space, it is better to come here in advance to easily park closer to the entrance. The first building of the dance floor was built in the 45th year of the last century, and then in 1959 a structure was erected, which has survived to this day. The inscription originally belonged to and was governed by a cell of the Communist Party of the Cain region.

Today it belongs to the Sotkamo Youth Foundation, which with the help of volunteers continues the tradition of holding dance evenings to live music by Finnish performers.

Their posters can be found in the local press or inquire about the necessary information from Vuokatti residents. As you know, it is customary for gentlemen to invite ladies to dances, but there is a so-called "white dance" when ladies are invited. It is usually specially announced. So, the Inscription never announces a "white dance", there is a special light board located on the left side of the stage. If the inscription "NAISTENHAKU" is lit on it, it means that ladies can be invited to dance, and if "SEKAHAKU" is lit, both ladies and gentlemen are invited. Finnish pop stars Leif Lindeman like to perform here.

It is possible that it was after his performance on this dance floor that the famous Finnish singer Kari Tapio was inspired to write the hit "Olen suomalainen" ("I am a Finn").

5. Visit local delicacies and drinks. For a taste of local delicacies, head to the Kippo Restaurant at Sokos Hotel. Here, the best chefs use traditional recipes to prepare traditional cuisine of the Cain region. We can recommend venison soup, bear meat, pheasant salad, salmon and perch fish dishes. Grilled venison liver is especially impressive, although a real delicacy here is a dish of lamb eggs.

But at the very top of Vuokatinwaara hill, there is Ripa's Kuppila cafe. It is known throughout Finland for its donuts with jelly and hot cocoa. Not so long ago in Vuokatti, the local masters of Haapala Brewery brewed four special beers: light "Golden ale", "Pale ale" with the taste of spruce, rye "Ipa" and "Porter" with the taste of resin.

The most famous resin, which was hunted even by pirates of the Caribbean, using it not only to build ships, but also to heal wounds, burns, strengthen teeth!

6. Attend a hockey match. Ice hockey for Finns is a favorite sport. Everyone can skate here, and there is a hockey rink in almost every town. And why Finns do not like hockey, because the national hockey team constantly delights its compatriots with victories in major competitions since the 90s of last century, and the names of some Finnish players are inscribed in the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

Sotkamon Municipality has its own hockey team, Sotkamon Kiekko ("Sotkamon Puck") or as it is called SoKi. Founded in 1996, she now plays in the second division of the National Hockey League. Coach SoKi Kari Kinnunen.

If there is a hockey match during your stay at the resort, be sure to go and watch it. By the way, Vuokatti is a favorite vacation spot of Finnish hockey legend - Jari Kurri. He comes here not only to relax, but also conducts master classes for young players.

7. Steam in the sauna in black. The sauna is blacker than usual because it does not have a chimney. Smoke escapes through windows and open doors, evenly heating the floor, walls and ceiling. At the same time soot settles on the walls, soaking and sterilizing them. If he didn't go to the sauna, then he wasn't in Finland. Earlier in the country, thousands of lakes began to build a house with a sauna, and then it was equipped with other rooms.

You can combine hotel accommodation and baths at the Holiday Club Katinkulta. Its uniqueness is that the hotel complex also includes a water park with outdoor pool, spa, several saunas.

The sauna in black here is located near the shore of the lake, so well steamed, you can immediately dive into the hole. I would recommend going to the water park after skiing to enjoy the starry sky from the outdoor pool. Another advantage of the hotel is the Vuokatti Bus stop in front of the entrance. This is a free bus that covers all the necessary places in Vuokatti. The timetable can be found at the hotel reception.

8. Take your soul away with the kids at the amusement park. New Year's holidays and holidays are a good reason to spend more time with children. A great place to implement the idea will be the amusement park SuperPark. The entrance ticket in the form of a bracelet is valid throughout the day. Play mini-golf or jump into the foam pool, throw a puck into the goal, play football, surround a baseball kick - you choose.

For lovers of skateboarding and scootering there is a skate park. Those who know how to do somersaults will appreciate the inflatable track for jumping AirTrack and a variety of springboards. You can climb the climbing wall, go downhill or ride a mini-car in the entertainment corner. If you get hungry, you can have a snack here in a restaurant in the park.

9. " Settles" at the monument to the man with the moose. Sotkamo and Vuokatti are just a few kilometers apart. If you drive from Vuokatti to Sotkamo, there is an unusual monument near the road on the right side. It is installed in honor of the local famous writer Weikko Huovinen. The peculiarity of the monument is that on the pedestal there is no usual sculpture of the writer, or even his portrait on a stone, but there is only a bronze elk and a full-length human figure. Surprised tourists just shrug in bewilderment.

And only the locals are able to clarify the essence of what is seen.

It turns out that Vejko Huovinen was the first to experience something shocking from meeting a wild elk in the surrounding forests. The fact is that the local moose are unique, nowhere else to find such a breed! After each such meeting, Vejko felt an unprecedented surge of physical and creative strength. He wrote unusually easily and lived well. Good luck in all matters. He was happy. That's why he called the animal the Happy Moose. The writer was looking for such meetings and believed that they in many ways predetermined fate, made him famous!

Weikko Huovinen is no more, and his belief in the inevitable luck of meeting a local moose is still alive, overgrown with new facts of miracles in people's destinies. Therefore, very often tourists are photographed near the monument in the hope that they will be lucky to meet a unique moose.

No less colorful place in Sotkamo is a shoe store. The assortment, placed in a small room, would be the envy of any Central Department Store. It has everything from warm slippers made of sheepskin to rubber boots for children and adults. The owner of the store will help you choose shoes, telling you about the latest trends.

10. Try rye bread and cakes at Pekka Heikkinen Bakery. Five years ago, Pekka Heikkinen & kumpp celebrated its centenary. She is considered one of the oldest in Kajaani. Here, bread is still baked by hand, the traditions are passed on to the fourth generation of bakers.

Pekka Heikkinen & kumpp became famous for its delicious rye bread baked in a wood-burning oven. No less popular is rye bread with the addition of resin, which gives a unique smoked taste. Yes, yes, the very resin with which the pirates tarred their ships.

Locals often come here for a cup of coffee with a cake while reading a newspaper or chatting with friends. Half a day is enough to visit the bakery and see the sights of Kajaani: visit the art museum, find out which clocks are right on the clock tower of the historic yellow town hall, walk through the ruins of the 17th century fortress, watch the world's only resin canal Ammyakoski. Although if you go shopping on the main shopping street - Kauppakatu, it is better to go to Kajaani for the whole day.

If you haven't had time to do all ten things in Vuokatti, this is a great reason to come back here again!
