Coconut Jail in Fukuoka
15 km from the mainland of Cambodia and 45 km from the Vietnamese city of Hatien (Na Tien) is the island of Phu Quoc, similar in size to Singapore. Washed by the waters of the Gulf of Thailand, mountainous and almost entirely covered with greenery, the island has a length of just under 50 km. which nevertheless does not make it possible to go around it in one day. The reason for this is the roads, or rather their absence. And the already mentioned mountains, the highest - 683 meters. One of the main advantages of the island is the beaches and clear coastal waters filled with marine life. The most attractive for lovers of secluded relaxation and swimming is the east coast.
In the southern part of the island, not reaching a couple of kilometers to the city of Anthoy. Coconut Prison (NhaLao Cay Dua) is located. During the years of French colonization, one of the largest criminal prisons was located here. According to some reports, up to 40.000 people were kept here.
With the expulsion of the French from the country, the casemates were not empty - any government needs a place to isolate objectionable citizens. During the rule of the South Vietnamese government, and later during the years of the American occupation, the prison housed mainly political prisoners.
In the near future, the Coconut Prison will become a museum. In the meantime, restoration work is underway here and admission to it is free.
