About the sea in Ostroh and the famous Bible
What to see in the ancient city of Ostrog, where the ancient princes studied?
Today we needed to find out.
And today we have a holiday on the road - Serhiy's birthday and morning started with a holiday cake with strawberries!
Happy inaction, Sergei! =)
We warmly said goodbye to the coordinator Oksana in Mlyniv. Farewells are always hard. Just met people, just worried, and we have to say goodbye.
Do you know what a city of 15 minutes is? This is Rivne today!
Our route today runs to Ostrog. Unfortunately, it is not possible to get directly from Mlyniv to Ostroh, you have to go through Rivne. So we pushed into a minibus, an hour later we went to Rivne and again boarded a minibus to Ostrog.
Oh, our voyages are the same entertainment and extreme: here you have a battle for life, and the quest "borrow a chair", and a sauna!
And here we are in Ostroh. The city with a long history, where the famous Ostroh Academy is located, where the castle of the Ostroh princes is located and the Ostroh Bible is kept.
The first thing we met in the city was the student canteen. We have seen similar prices only in Skhidnytsia (oh, how long ago it was). Borsch here costs UAH 7, pies UAH 4.60, sausage in the dough UAH 7.50. So, if you are in Ostroh, it is worth eating cheap in the student canteen in the city center.
In translation, Ostrog is a fortification, a fortress.
The oldest part of the city is the Castle Hill, that's where we went. On the castle hill there is a castle (well, everything is logical here) and now the castle, like other objects in the city belong to the historical and cultural reserve.
And the castle took an honorable 10th place in the selection of the wonders of Ukraine.
The castle itself, of course, is not as beautiful as it once was. It began to be reconstructed and put in order in 1909. Today there is the Epiphany Cathedral of the XV century. It is said that noble natives of the Ostroh family are buried in the dungeons under the cathedral.
In addition to the cathedral, there are two defensive towers: a round one, which is also called a new one, and a brick one.
The masonry turned out to be the most interesting.
Admission to the territory is free, but you need to buy a ticket to the brick tower. It costs UAH 20.
The tower was built in 1386, and now has a museum. Here you can see the former scale of Ostrog, portraits of the nobility, paintings, icons, household items used by princes.
And, of course, everyone knows that the first printing house was opened in Ostroh with the academy. Ivan Fedorov worked here and published the first "Primer".
Well, the most important and valuable thing is the original of the Ostroh Bible of 1581. There used to be about 30 original copies of the Bible. There are only 3 left now.
Another famous and valuable exhibit is a portrait of an unknown man from 1610. But it is believed that this is a portrait of Baida Vyshnevetsky.
Once the Ostroh family was famous and rich. Currently, there are only heirs from the female line.
We hid from the heat in the museum. We inspected three floors.
Then our route passed through the synagogue, which was built in the 15th century. It is one of the oldest synagogues in Eastern Europe.
Until last year, there was a landfill here and only a year ago the synagogue began to be repaired and cleaned.
And where there is a synagogue, of course, there is a cemetery. We also went there. Unfortunately, everything here is overgrown with grass and nettles.
So I made my way through the thorns.
And for dinner and birthday we went with pizza to the Ostroh Sea. Yes, there is a sea! And you can not look at the map. The local sea is a reservoir from the nearest nuclear power plant. And the townspeople come here to relax, look at swans and even swim. Interestingly, the reservoir is already in the Khmelnytsky region and in 15 minutes we visited two regions of Ukraine.
They met the sunset there and finally rested after a hot day.
Thanks to our local coordinator Valentina for the reception!
П. S. Today we have hidden another certificate that will give you a day on the route "Embroidered Way".
This time everything is not as easy and simple as it was in the past, but I think you will be guided by the photo.
