The idea to get to the annual derun festival (or Derun-fest) arose a long time ago, but somehow could not materialize. In fact, the impetus for the trip this year was a comment on the story of Uzhgorod. In this story, in the part about Transcarpathian cuisine, I wrote that "...unknown cues are ordinary potato pancakes ... ". In response, the following remark was made: “Potato pancakes are potato chips, and potato pancakes are potato pancakes. Here is a mention of the film "Guest from the Future" based on "One Hundred Years Ahead" by Kira Bulychova: Five minutes. - So, it is on Peteyarov? ...". . Т. It turned out that not all tourist truth-tellers know what kind of potato pancakes they are ...And it was so strange to me, the inhabitants of Polissya. to visit - they live with us.
After all, there is nothing better than, say, returning home in the winter from the frost, its hot, crunchy, straight from the pan with sour cream to eat! ...Mmmmmm!
And about the fact that in all cafes and restaurants we serve potato pancakes with "nothing", and potato pancakes with cracklings, and potato pancakes with meat, and potato pancakes in pots, etc. , etc. , etc. - I generally silent : ).

And where else to explore it, if not at the Potato Festival? ! ! That's why back in June I circled the date of September 12 with a red marker in my diary, and in anticipation of the holiday I started studying the match on Wikipedia.
And that's what turned out. Tertyukhy, kremzlik, kiizlik, tarchanyky, betsy, geyzebubeli, google are potato brothers from different regions of Ukraine.
Foreign relatives are Belarusian draniki, Polish placki ziemniaczane , and Czech bramborá kem . And German Kartoffelpuffer, Romanian tocinei, Swedish raggmunk or rå rakor, American not at all adapted to writing in Cyrillic. em> Hash brown or Potato pancakes, Irish Boxty.
Of course, all glamorous fans and their "dads" are served this dish of Ukrainian cuisine in Ukrainian restaurants, even with red caviar. But in fact potato pancakes are, like paella from the Spaniards, the food of the poor. Since potato pancakes are potato pancakes (or thick pancakes), and something, our people have grown and continue to grow potatoes at all times. Potato pancakes are called potato pancakes because the main component for their preparation - potatoes - "peel", ie rubbed on a grater. There are many variations of the dish.
And I honestly lived all my life in the firm belief that potato pancakes are as commonplace for all Slavs as, say, fried potatoes.
So, it's decided. Let's go to the potato festival! As always, the departure is questionable until the last moment. And here is Saturday morning. Finally on the road!
Like many girls, for some reason I chronically confuse the cities of Korosten and Korostyshiv.
Despite the fact that they are in exactly opposite directions: Korostyshiv to the east, on the road to Kyiv, and here Korosten - to the north closer, in the direction of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. As always, the driver could not help but worry about this, and after turning in the right place on the right road, he sarcastically asked me: "So where are we going? ”. To which I, armed with the Derun Fest program, on which the name of the city is printed, answered without hesitation: to Korosten!
Despite the fact that Korosten is my native Zhytomyr region, to my shame, I didn't know much about it. Well, several times we passed by Polissya. No, of course, I remembered from the school history course how cruelly Princess Olga took revenge on the people of Drevnya for Igor's death, burned the city to the ground. But on the eve of the trip I decided to still refresh what I can and fill in where needed.
Who wants to - welcome to the Korosten website . All the same, it is written more interestingly than I will tell.
Of course, I understand that in someone's experience, this festival is by no means a global event. On the other hand, it is our Lviv: every day it is festival after festival, holiday after holiday. And I have a young lady I know who has been sewing various holiday "outfits" for the town where she lives for many years in the Portuguese province. According to her, there is no downtime at all.
This week they went to the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the next - to the agricultural festival, another week - to the wine competition. And so all year round. At the same time, there are several such workshops in the town. Can you imagine the scale of the festivities? ! ! Well, what is worse than our Zhytomyr region of some Lisbon region? ! !
Derun Festival (Derun-Fest) is traditionally held in Korosten on the second Saturday of September, in the city park. Ostrovsky.
The first festival took place in 2008. At the same time, the largest potato pancake in Ukraine weighing as much as 118 kg was baked! A potato monument was unveiled at the second festival:
The third festival in 2010 became famous for a new record potato - now weighing 140 kg. And in 2015, the organizers of the festival decided to bake potato pancakes in the form of a map of Ukraine. I won't lie: I don't even know if they baked it.
Because, to be honest, we didn't see almost anything stated in the program on the festival website . Maybe it looked bad : ). However, no one recorded for the Potato Lovers' Club, nor did they offer the taster's patent, nor did they hold a potato triathlon.
Triathlon is especially unfortunate, because it involved such stages. You can - squat with two huge pitchers (well, this is such a big pitcher-bowl) with potatoes.
Capable - you compete in throwing potato pancakes: you need to throw it in a bowl with sour cream from 5 m. Dexterous, brave and courageous - throw potato pancakes at a competitor from the same 5 m launched : ). Maybe the crisis has affected (yet it's not time to scatter the products now), maybe something else, but there was no triathlon (or, again, we simply missed it, because the crowding was the worst).
In general, I have the impression of some "spontaneity" of what is happening. That is, by and large, this year's festival itself was reduced to a mass folk festival in the park with the parallel eating of both pre-cooked and potato pancakes, which are prepared immediately. Well, the accompanying drinking (where else without it) "fire water" in different variations: ).
But, of all things, Korosten residents are very proud of their festival.
Among those who represented the art of pottery were almost all enterprises and organizations of the city, from schools and hospitals to the Union of Railway Workers, as well as local deputies: )

The park, although not small, is multilevel (by the way, very beautiful, and the number of any monuments in general is a record holder), so the park for such a large number of guests, in my opinion, is too small.
And if we consider that the beginning of the festival took place at 13.00, then by three o'clock in the afternoon it was easy not to push. Everyone, of course, was nice and friendly, but the hustle and bustle was a little stressful.
Plus to the places with the most delicious potato pancakes, as usual, queues lined up, and had to wait for the desired portion convulsively swallow saliva, which did not contribute to a positive perception of the world around: )

In addition, you could eat soup, pilaf and banosha. And about all sorts of crap-mead-kalganivka and others. etc. and say nothing!
There were a lot of Korosten residents on the holiday. And many came with whole families, in embroidered shirts, with pre-prepared potato pancakes, with their "hammer", with godparents, parents, etc. , etc. And somehow without a fuss, but very emotionally celebrated: sang "Red Route", drank, talked and laughed. Rested. As before… And I liked it the most.
No, I'm lying. I liked potato pancakes the most. They were incredible. And not on "peteyar oil", no. In the fat, with the most delicate cracklings. In olive oil. On lard. With salted cheese filling with herbs and garlic.
With mushrooms. Just small and with cream. Oh, that's where you start to regret that you can not eat the stock.
And this despite the fact that before the trip I was not such a fan of them: )
More annoying. There were no "pottery" souvenirs at all. Not even a fridge magnet in the form of a potato pancake. No Drevlya symbols (at least strange for a city with such a rich history). This is the "golden bottom"! And where do Korosten businessmen and rulers look? ! !
The next amount is multiple sclerosis : ). As a person who is no longer young, but not yet old, I love the Internet, smartphone, tablet and so on. But the user I, eeeee…. . , not very advanced. That's why I usually do everything "old-fashioned": instead of audio guides I use a self-made book printed on paper, which can be read aloud.
And because my voice is so loud, sometimes even strangers join us in the firm belief that I am a guide. Aha-ha!
However, this time I did something wrong and did not publish the book (but there was something). As a result, we didn't see a good half of what we were supposed to see. For example, I did not even mention the so-called "Rock" object - a secret underground command post during the Great Patriotic War. And it is also known for having the largest and only collection of gas masks in Ukraine (just don't laugh now). Among its exhibits are gas masks even for children and animals (! ): Horses and cows.
And I didn't even mention "Rock"… Apparently, a good portion of potato pancakes, eaten immediately after arrival, and (what to hide there) flavored with a glass of shit (nuclear and cold) somehow blunted and slowed down all mental processes. It remains only to swim in the crowd here and there, looking at the fountain:

Summarizing all the above, I will say this. Potato pancakes, as well as the park itself, and the city of Korosten - these are three whales that can decorate the autumn weekend. Can I recommend Derun Fest to visit? Definitely so. And if next autumn you want something authentic, spiritual and patriarchal - then welcome to Korosten!
