Dar al-Hajar Palace

Dhar Al Hajjar Palace, Rock Palace, Imam Palace
Yemen, Sana
The Dar-al-Hajar Palace stands on a high rocky cliff in the green oasis of the Wadi Dahr valley, in the village of Souk al-Wadi, 15 km from the city of Sana'a. It is one of the main national symbols of the country and a typical example of Yemeni architecture. The beautiful palace was built in the 1930s. on the site of the castle, destroyed by the Turks in the Middle Ages, as a summer residence for the then ruling Imam Yahya ben Mohammed Hamid-ad-Din.
The palace has 5 floors, 35 rooms of different size and purpose, many stairs, a wonderful courtyard, as well as several beautiful balconies and terraces. It also has a special water cooling system, fountains and a deep well. The palace is decorated with white patterns of plaster painting and multi-colored stained-glass windows, and on the walls, openwork decorative elements and various oriental ornaments attract attention. After the overthrow of the imam, the Palace on the rock was turned into a museum, which is now open to the public.

This walled city was built on top of a massive rocky outcrop in the mountains of West Yemen, Sana'a Province. The history of this place is so ancient that even the inhabitants of this place do not know when the first settlers arrived here. As a result of the study of these places, the first settlements occurred around the 12th century. The secluded and remote culture and traditions have survived to this day. The city itself is fertile, allowing for the cultivation of wheat and herbs that support camels and horses.
