The Confucian Temple of Literature was built in the early 11th century. during the reign of Emperor Li Thanh Tong as the first Vietnamese university to educate the sons of nobles and courtiers. It is a complex of buildings with a park, ponds and courtyards, surrounded by a stone wall. Visitors to the temple will be interested to see the Literary Pavilion, the Well of Celestial Clarity, steles with the names of university graduates on the backs of turtles, statues of Confucius and his four disciples, pavilions and courtyards. The Temple of Literature is a memorial of education, science and literature, where Confucius was revered and the works of many scientists and sages of his time were studied. Van Mieu is a wonderful example of traditional Vietnamese architectural style.
