Japantown is located north of Alamo Square. It was formed at the beginning of the 20th century, when, after the earthquake of 1906, most of the Japanese living in the city began to look for new housing. The quarter is distinguished by a large number of Japanese restaurants and shops, electronics stores, and there are also Buddhist and Shinto shrines. It is also home to the Japan Center, a huge hotel and shopping complex.
