The Los Angeles HOLLYWOOD Sign, designed by architect Thomas Fisk Goff, was erected in the Hollywood Hills on Mount Lee's southern slope in 1923 as an advertisement for the new developments in the Hollywood area. Subsequently, the inscription became a symbol of American cinema. The sign is made up of white steel letters 13.7 m high and 9.3-11.8 m wide, mounted on a concrete foundation.
To prevent possible acts of vandalism, a video surveillance system with motion detectors is used, which turns on an alarm when an object approaches the sign at a distance of less than 50 meters.
The HOLLYWOOD sign is visible from almost anywhere in Los Angeles, best seen from the observation deck in the
Griffith Observatory park.
