Griffith Observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles and is one of the most popular places among tourists. From its observation deck, you can admire views of downtown, Hollywood with its famous
HOLLYWOOD sign, and the Pacific Ocean.
The observatory is named after Colonel Jenkins Griffith, a major industrialist and philanthropist who donated the land where the observatory is located to the city and donated a considerable amount for its construction. The observatory, together with the exhibition halls, was opened to the public in May 1935.
The planetarium, located in the central building, demonstrates various show programs about the structure of the Universe, planets and stars. Under the main dome of the observatory, a giant Foucault pendulum is installed to visually demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. There is a museum in which there is a reduced model of the observatory itself, and everyone can control the telescopes installed inside the building.
