Watts Towers
Watts Towers, The Watts Towers of Simon Rodia
USA, Los Angeles
Sam (Simon) Rodia, an American worker of Italian origin, began building his brainchild when he was 42 years old, and completed the construction at the age of 75 years. After all, he built his towers alone and with constant opposition from his neighbors.
Watts Towers is a futuristic construction of 17 sculptures and towers, the two tallest of which are 29 and 30 meters high, made up of rebar wrapped in wire and steel pipes. The structure is decorated with tiles, glass, pieces of multi-colored porcelain, plastic, shells, picked up by an amateur architect during walks around Los Angeles.
In 1955, after the construction was completed, Rodia, due to the hostility of those around him, transferred his property to a neighbor under an act and went to live in another city. After 20 years, it was decided to demolish the building due to its deplorable state, but the Hollywood community defended the towers for transfer to the city. Today, the Simon Rodia Towers are one of the brightest symbols of Los Angeles.
