Vynohradiv Castle
Kank Castle
Carpathians, Vynohradiv
The ruins of a medieval castle, located at the foot of the Black Mountain in the small town of Vynohradiv, in the Transcarpathian region. During the period of its power, the castle had a quadrangular shape with square towers at each of the corners. Until now, only a few fragments of the Vinogradov castle, surrounded by household plots, have survived. The castle has a long and sad history. The first mention of a fortified settlement on this site dates back to the beginning of the 10th century. After the entry of Transcarpathia into the Kingdom of Hungary, a wooden castle of the local feudal lord was built here. As a result of internecine wars in the XIV century, the castle was significantly destroyed. However, it was restored by the Hungarian king and subsequently changed several owners. For some time the castle served as a monastery for Franciscan monks. By that time it was a stone fortress. In the middle of the 16th century, a descendant of one of the former owners of the castle captured the monastery, and killed the resisting monks.. The royal detachment was called to curb the troublemaker, who in 1557 took the castle by storm and practically destroyed it. In the same century, already the Austrian authorities, fighting the Hungarian nobility, completed the destruction of the castle.
