Nevitsky castle

Nevitsky castle
Carpathians, Uzhhorod
Nevitsky Castle is a castle near the villages of Nevitskoye and Kamyanitsa in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, which is 12 km north of the regional center Uzhgorod. The castle was built in the 13th century on a hilltop above the valley of the river Uzh on the site of an earlier wooden fortification. In 1241 it was destroyed by the hordes of the Mongol-Tatars, but in the second half of the 13th century it was restored. At the turn of the XIII-XIV centuries, a quadrangular three-tiered donjon tower was built on the site of a round donjon. With the development of firearms, the castle was constantly improved and rebuilt, and acquired its final shape at the beginning of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, during the possession of the Druget family, the castle changed hands several times as a result of internecine wars. In 1644, the castle was captured and destroyed by the Transylvanian governor György Rákóczi. Since then, the castle has not been restored and has survived to our times in the form of ruins.
The defensive fortifications include two ramparts with a moat between them, a defensive wall with four towers on the inner rampart, an entrance tower and internal buildings with a donjon tower. Of the four towers (end of the 14th-beginning of the 15th century) on the inner shaft of the fortifications, three are semi-oval and one is triangular. In the southwestern part there is a hexagonal entrance tower, which is connected to the main fortifications by two parallel defensive walls. Among the internal buildings of the castle, a square donjon tower stands out. There is a well with a diameter of 3.5 meters in the castle courtyard.

Currently, the castle is in a mothballed state. The upper parts of the surviving towers are equipped with hipped ceilings, which give the buildings a peculiar charm.

The ruins of the castle are located away from the roads, so it is better to go either by car or with a guided tour. It is badly damaged, I expected better...no one guards, they don't particularly restore it, so it will fall apart soon, which is a pity. Beautiful views and nature around.
