Reserve Cape Martyan
Miss Martyan
Crimea, Yalta
Monument of nature (1947), state reserve (1973).
The reserve "Cape Martyan" is located in close proximity to the famous park plantings of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden, whose researchers conduct research here. Garden scientists have identified more than 500 species of higher plants on Cape Martyan, 14 of them are endemic.
A site of primeval juniper forest has been preserved here, some old trees of which are up to 500-600 years old. And the local population of small-fruited strawberry - one of the largest on the South Coast - has about 3,000 individuals of this relic. Three relict species - high juniper, small-fruited strawberry and goat's thong are listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
All rare and relic plants are under reliable protection here. The fauna of the reserve is also peculiar: 15 species of mammals, 150 species of birds are found here; 11 representatives of the fauna are listed in the Red Books, and the Crimean gecko and leopard snake - in the International Red Book.
The strip of the Black Sea water area adjacent to Cape Martyan is also a protected area: more than 50 species of fish live here. In summer, there is little shade in the juniper forest of the reserve, the air is very hot, and the loud singing of cicadas can be heard from everywhere. Such is this unique monument of ancient Crimean nature.
