The remains of a medieval cave monastery are located at the foot of Mount Sokol (in a sandstone cliff, closer to the sea), at the entrance to the village of Novyi Svet. The monastery was founded in the 8th century. n. e. Byzantine monks-icon worshipers in the caves. Was destroyed by the Turks.
The description of the monastery is included by Archbishop Gabriel in the list of shrines of Taurida.
The ascent to it is extremely difficult and is accessible only to pedestrians: several times it is necessary to descend into the abyss and climb the steepness, meeting thousands of obstacles at every step. From the south side of the temple, a stream of pure water flows out of a cleft in the stone.” Subsequently, the caves collapsed.
The monastery was reopened by N. Lezin in the 1920s. Local historian discovered the remains of three caves. A cross was carved on the wall of one of them. Here, a small bench or shelf was carved into the rock. In another cave, the ceiling and part of the front wall with a layer of plaster or paint are still preserved.
At the moment, a part of one of the monastic cells with a cross carved on the wall has been preserved. At the foot of the cliff, archaeologists have cleared the remains of a vanished temple.
