The bastions formed the basis of the defense in depth of the fortress. There were seven in total. Monuments and commemorative signs were built on the sites of all seven bastions, forming a single system of monuments along the defense line. They organically entered the entire memorial complex dedicated to the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. The basis of the memorial complex of the Fifth Bastion includes monuments - the Communards memorial cemetery, the main alley leads to the monument to Lieutenant P. Schmidt, the leaders of the uprising in November 1905, the Ochakovites S. Chastnik, N. Antonenko, and A. Gladkov, in the necropolis there are many graves of heroes who died during defense of the city in 1941-1942, there is also a mass grave of the sailors of the battleship Novorossiysk, which sank from an explosion in 1955. Admiral F.S. is also buried here. Oktyabrsky, who during the war commanded the Black Sea Fleet.
