Malakhov Kurgan
Memorial Complex Malakhov Kurgan
Crimea, Sevastopol
Malakhov Kurgan outwardly, perhaps, is not very impressive: the hill is like a hill. But, occupying a dominant position over the Ship side, he during the defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. was a key position on the left flank of the defensive line. The loss of the barrow predetermined the outcome of the 349-day defense of Sevastopol. At the beginning of the main alley of the mound, on a small platform, there is a mass grave. Russian and French soldiers who died in the last battle on Malakhov Kurgan on August 27, 1855, on the 349th day of defense, are buried in it. A large white marble cross was erected on the grave by the French with the inscription: "September 3, 1855. They were inspired by victory And united by death - Such is the glory of the brave, Such is the fate of the soldiers." During the years of the last war, the monument was destroyed, restored in 1960 according to the project of the architect A.L. Schaeffer.
