Ancient city of Chersonese

Archaeological Reserve Chersonese, Tauric Chersonese
Crimea, Sevastopol
The only coastal monument of nature in the foothills of Crimea (1972). Off the coast of the former ancient city of Chersonesos, there is a small protected aquatic complex - the Khersones Bay, which preserves the original coastal biocenoses and interesting underwater archaeological material.
Chersonese archaeological reserve. This city existed on the Crimean coast for almost two millennia. It was called Tauric Chersonesus (from the Greek "Chersonese" - peninsula). Him in 422-421. BC. founded by Heracliots - immigrants from the South Black Sea (Asia Minor) city of Heraclea - on the shore of the bay, now called Karantinnaya. A century later, Chersonese turns into one of the largest policies - city-states of the Northern Black Sea region. In terms of its political structure, it was a slave-owning republic with a democratic form of government, and in terms of socio-economic essence, it was a center of trade, crafts, and culture. Its population reached 20 thousand people. From the 5th century n. e. Chersonese is part of the Byzantine Empire. In 988, after a 9-month siege, the city (Russian name Korsun) was taken by Prince Vladimir. Here Vladimir converted to Christianity.
At the end of the XII-XIV centuries. Chersonese twice suffered from the attacks of the Tatar hordes. By the middle of the XV century. the city ceased to exist. Already in 1472, the Genoese consul in Cafe (Feodosia) called it "one uninhabited place." Now in its place is the Khersonessky historical and archaeological reserve (the territory of the city of Sevastopol). Having visited the museum, you can see the ruins of the ancient theater - the only one in our country, city blocks, a section of defensive walls with Zeno's tower and many other interesting architectural structures.

Walking through the narrow streets of the city, you get into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. On the territory of the Chersonese bell, which is cast from Turkish cannons taken as a trophy, Zenon's tower (fortress tower) - the defensive left-flank tower of Chersonesos, an ancient theater and a basilica. The remaining structures have not yet been restored, but excavations are underway.

An ancient ancient city-polis that keeps the spirit of millennia, fills with energy and strength, inspires to live and create. It was Chersonese who was chosen by Prince Vladimir for the adoption of Christianity - there is an incredible atmosphere and a sense of holiness here. You need to come here for at least half a day to walk along the quiet ancient streets, visit exhibitions, excavations of Basilicas, view the majestic Temple of St. Vladimir, relax on a rocky beach, and make a wish at the Foggy Bell, so that you will definitely come back here again .
