Devil's Ladder Pass
Shaitan-Merdven Pass, Shaitan-Merdven
Crimea, Olive
Shaitan-Merdven (Devil's Staircase) - pass. This is a pleasant, accessible even for the elderly way to the mountains. In addition, it is conspicuous and well marked. Young Pushkin wrote about him with humor: "We climbed the mountain stairs on foot, holding our Tatar horses by the tail. This amused me extremely and seemed like a mysterious oriental rite." In fact, not only nature has tried to facilitate the ascent. In late antiquity, when Roman garrisons stood on the shores of the Crimea, legionnaires paved the way (Via Militara) between Tauric Chersonese and the fortress of Charax (below the Swallow's Nest). On the yayla it is quite flat, but among the wild cliffs it is still quite convenient. Rocky cliffs, and on these plummets, pine trees miraculously stuck to them. How are they alive? And in the clefts of the rocks in some places there are tiny groves of evergreen small-fruited strawberry - "shameless". Graceful trees, but some of them are 300-400 years old. At the beginning of summer, they can be seen as if in tatters, changing the bark. By autumn, the bark will become smooth and unusually red.. The panorama of the coast from Cape Sarych - the extreme southern tip of Crimea - and almost to Mount Koshka is fascinating. The way up, although steep, but without any surprises, dangers and dizzying ascents. In recent years, Shaitan-Merdven has been chosen by owners of mountain bikes - that's really a shaitan cart, truly!
