Perekop rampart
Turkish shaft
Crimea, Krasnoperekopsk
In the very north of the Crimean peninsula, the legendary Perekop rampart with a deep moat is located - a unique monument of fortification, stretching across the entire isthmus a few kilometers north of the city of Armyansk. Once upon a time, a deep ditch connected the Karkinit Bay of the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov (now these are only lakes left from the sea - Sivash, or "rotten sea"). The perekospky shaft stretched for - 8475 m, the width at the base is more than 15 meters, the height from the bottom of the ditch is 18-20 m. A ditch 20 m wide and 10 m deep adjoins the shaft. merchant ships pass from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, however, over the centuries, the depth of both seas in the isthmus region has become minimal, and now the shaft will not be able to play the role of the "Suet Canal". Perekop shaft - the main gate of the Crimea, thoroughly destroyed by time and wars, does not look as impregnable as before, but to this day it amazes with its scale.
