Arabat fortress
Arabata fortress
Crimea, Feodosiya
After turning to the Strelka, the road is almost pressed close to the seashore. On the right, the last houses of Kamensky flash by. Behind him is the sea. Everything here breathes silence, peace, serenity. But the former name of the village - Ak-Monai - is well known in the history of two wars. The Akmonai Isthmus is also known - a narrow 17-kilometer strip of land between the Arabat and Feodosiya bays.
The strategic advantage of the isthmus was appreciated in ancient times. Here was the western border of the Bosporan kingdom, which arose on the site of Kerch back in the 5th century. BC e. Two kilometers from Kamenskoye you will see on the right as if growing from behind sandy hills powerful walls with loopholes. This is the Arabat fortress. Its three-meter-thick walls, the polygons of the forts, are well preserved, but only piles of clay and stone remained in the fortress courtyard itself. In front of the walls there is a fortress moat, behind it is a rampart, which even now in some places reaches a height of 7-8 m. pools. This was the extremely advantageous position of the fortress in its time. The entrance to it is through the gate located in the southern wall facing the Kerch Peninsula. To the east, north and west are gun loopholes located in several rows, such an arrangement, obviously, made it possible to simultaneously use guns of different systems and power. There are very few reports about the Arabat fortress in the reference and local history literature, meanwhile it was a silent witness to the stormy and tragic events.
