Juma-Jami Mosque

Khan-Jami Mosque
Crimea, Yevpatoria
Juma-Jami, she is Khan-Jami - the cathedral Friday mosque in Evpatoria, the main mosque of the city. The mosque is located in the park area. Karaev; towering above the adjacent buildings, it is clearly visible both from the sea and from the shore.

The largest and most majestic mosque in Crimea, Juma-Jami, was founded in Gezlev in 1552 under Khan Devlet I Gerai. Khan ordered the project of the mosque in Istanbul to the architect Khodja Sinan, a Greek by origin, a highly educated person, engineer, mathematician, architect, who gave the world more than three hundred wonderful buildings (including the Suleymaniye Mosque and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul). The construction of the mosque took a long time, since Khoja Sinan was building the mosque of Sultan Suleiman I at the same time in Istanbul, moreover, there were not enough funds - most of the money received by the treasury was spent on waging war with Ivan the Terrible.
Since the completion of construction, the mosque has undergone numerous alterations and restorations. A few years ago, the mosque was completely restored according to all the rules of science with the restoration of lost details and the release of the building from architectural layers. Thus, two minarets that collapsed in the early 19th century as a result of an earthquake were completely restored. During the years of Soviet power, the mosque was closed, and in the 1990s it was returned to believers.

The composition of the temple is built on the principle of "increasing volumes". The well-known St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople could serve as a model for this and other mosques of Khoja Sinan. The load-bearing parts of the cathedral are made of limestone, but the main material used in the construction is shell stone. The mosque is a central domed building, approaching a square in plan, with two minarets attached to it from the west and from the east. Two tiers of sparsely planted windows illuminate the two-story side galleries covered with flat domes three in a row. The central hall, about 22 meters high, is covered with a powerful dome with 16 windows.

Probably the most interesting place in Evpatoria. For those who like to learn something about other cultures. We were lucky and during a visit to the mosque we got to a Muslim wedding. This is an exciting action. Women are required to wear clothes that cover their arms and legs. And in the mosque they give a special robe. The tour was very interesting. And after it, having retired to a decent distance, we still heard the sounds of prayers, which were broadcast over the loudspeakers.
