The remains of the "cave city" Bakla are located southeast of the village of Skalisty, Bakhchisaray district. Bakla was an open medieval settlement not protected by a defensive wall, adjoining a small fortress - a castle. At 17 km of the Simferopol-Bakhchisarai highway, the highway to the Observatory goes south, at the beginning the road passes through the village of Skalistoye. To the left rise two giant steps of an active quarry, and below it, an old quarry flooded by the waters of springs. At the exit from the village in the narrowest part of the valley in the overhanging rocks there are many grottoes - Shaitan-koba. In one of them, the remains of animal bones and tools of labor of primitive people were found. In the same massif as the quarry and grottoes, only in its south-western cliffs are carved crypts (leveled caves) of the medieval city of Bakla.
Streets and lanes are still clearly visible on the territory of the settlement, traces of houses and small chapels are visible. This is an ancient center of winemaking, which has preserved the remains of two estates with several dozen stone pithoi (tanks) and tarapana wine presses. Most of all, Bakla attracts visitors with rock outcrops that became the object of the official tour of the World Geological Congress in 1984. For more than half a century, future geologists from leading universities in Russia and Ukraine have been practicing here. The bizarre figures of cellular weathering of the local limestones suggest a grandiose catastrophe, which led to the instant death of numerous marine organisms.
