Mausoleum of Aziz
Mausoleum of Abdel Aziz Baba
Crimea, Bakhchysarai
In the suburbs of Bakhchisaray, in the old days called Azis, several unique architectural monuments of the Middle Ages - durbe (mausoleums of the Crimean khans) have been preserved. One of the most interesting buildings is Eski-Dyurbe ("old mausoleum"), built much earlier than the Khan's Palace - in the 15th century. The shape of the mausoleum is a cube, covered with a spherical dome, with an open courtyard with a fountain adjoining from the south, where one could sit alone, mentally conversing with the deceased. The building is monumental, sustained in good proportions; skillfully executed stone work. Bakhchisarai durbe builders were inspired by the forms of Eski-Dyurbe for a long time. The builder of the Bey-Yude-Sultan mausoleum (XV century) made a cube with beveled corners. The creator of the durbe, Ahmed Bey (beginning of the 16th century), returns to the silhouette of Eski-Dyurbe, but without a courtyard. The mausoleums of Muhammad Bey and Muhammad Giray II (XVI-XVII centuries) were built in the form of slender octahedrons with niches and thin protruding semi-columns. The mausoleums of Azis were deliberately left here in order to be able to trace how this type of building developed in Bakhchisarai.
