marble cave

Marmur cave
Crimea, Alushta
In 1987, on the northwestern slope of the Chatyrdag massif, Simferopol speleologists discovered and explored a unique karst cave - Marble. The discovery of the Marble Cave, unique in size, richness and diversity of mineral deposits, has become a sensation among the scientific, speleological and tourist community.

In 1997, in order to improve the excursion service for visitors, the excursion routes of the Marble Cave were completely reconstructed, underground excursion routes equipped with an electronic remote control system for light were developed and introduced, the equipment of the route through the grandiose Perestroika Hall to one of the largest underground halls in the Gorny caves was completed. Crimea. Between 1960 and 1987 On Chatyrdag, various scientific and speleological organizations discovered and described 135 karst caves, wells and mines. Of these, 8 are large and 14 are significant.
Marble Cave ranks first in length, area and volume, accounting for 60% of the total area and 40% of the total volume of all karst cavities in the massif. The entrance to the cave is located at an absolute mark of 918 m above sea level. , on a gently sloping - slightly karsted watershed between the Chumnoh gully and its continuation of the Taz-Kora ravines, on the one hand, and its right unnamed tributary, on the other. The cave is laid in the Upper Jurassic thick-layered and medium-platy marble-like limestones, thanks to which it got its name - Marble. The karst system of the Marble Cave is a system of large galleries of general meridional strike, at depths of 10–80 m. The total length of explored passages is 2050 m, the area is 21.7 thousand m2. volume 125.2 thousand m3.
The Marble Cave consists of three large morphological elements: the rectilinear Main Gallery, oriented almost strictly along the strike of limestone strata, 725 m long, the sinuous Lower Gallery 960 m long, forming a series of meanders with a strike of 90-2600 and the Tigrovy Prokhod, 390 m long, which is, as it were, lateral the influx of these galleries and changing orientation from 15 to 2000. The halls in the cave were formed when the single galleries were divided by streaks and blocky heaps. The cave is replete with landslide-gravitational water-mechanical secondary deposits of various types. Along with active sinter formations, the cave contains ancient sinter forms, in particular sinter crusts up to 1.5 m thick, which indicates that Marble is one of the oldest karst cavities in the Crimean Mountains.

To date, the length of the excursion routes in the Marble Cave reaches more than 1.5 km and covers one of the most spectacular galleries of the cave.

There are about 200 caves, funnels, vertical shafts, wells, grottoes on the Lower Plateau of the Chatyr-Dag mountain range. But only five of them can be visited without special caving equipment and training. These are two unequipped horizontal caves - Binbash-Koba (Thousand-Headed) and Suuk-Koba (Cold). They are located on the southwestern edge of the Lower Plateau. Free admission. As well as the three most famous and equipped for sightseeing caves: Marble, Mamontova (aka Emine-Bair-Khosar) and Three-eyes (aka Emine-Bair-Koba).
