Ruins of Fortress Zvyagel

Fragments of the Zvyagel fortress are located on the high bank of the river. A case in the center of Novograd-Volynsky. For the first time the settlement is mentioned as Vozvyagel in the Galicia-Volyn Chronicle of 1256. In 1257, the fortified city, due to the disobedience of its inhabitants, was destroyed and burned by the retinue of Prince Danila of Galicia. The construction of the castle was started in 1507 by Prince K. Ostrozhsky on the eastern borders of his Volyn possessions. Zvyahel Castle was destroyed in 1648-49 during the Liberation War of the Ukrainian people under the leadership of Bogdan Khmelnytsky. In 1795, after joining Russia, at the behest of Catherine II, Zvyagel became Novograd-Volynsky.
In Soviet times, the territory on which the castle-fortress was located was turned into a recreation area, fragments of walls with a moat and gates, a bastion were reconstructed, and a stylized fortress tower was erected.
Near the fortress, a bell is suspended between the pillars - a symbol of Novograd-Volynsky, the former Zvyagel - from the word "ring" - "ring". According to tradition, newlyweds come here to wish for a happy married life.
