The Flat House is located at the intersection of Teatralnaya Street and Pobedy Square in the center of Zhytomyr and is a regional architectural monument. The building began to be built in the middle of the 19th century for the city fire department at the corner of the intersection, when other buildings were already erected around, to maximize the use of space, the architect erected end walls at an acute angle. After the demolition of old neighboring buildings and the construction of new ones already at some distance from the former house of the fireman, when looking at it from a certain angle, the effect of the absence of side walls is created and the house is seen as flat. The wings attached to the sides gave the building the shape of a heart, which is why the building is sometimes called the “House-heart” or “House-chimera”.
