The Church of St. Sophia in Zhytomyr is the cathedral church of the Kiev-Zhytomyr Roman Catholic Diocese, together with the so-cathedral
St. Alexander's Cathedral in Kyiv. The construction of the church in the Baroque and Renaissance style with a three-tiered bell tower 26 meters high began in 1831 on Castle Hill and ended in 1851. One of the pylons of the cathedral is decorated with a bas-relief created by the famous pianist and composer Juliusz Zarembski. In 1768, the cathedral was burnt down by Russian troops participating in the suppression of the Bar Confederation, which opposed the Polish king. In 1789-1801, the church was rebuilt: two side chapels were added, the facade was remade, the roof was replaced, and choirs were built to install a new organ. Stucco and wall paintings have been preserved in the interior.
