The Vinnitsa Regional Museum of Local Lore was established in May 1918 on the basis of natural, ethnographic, historical collections of the county zemstvo, the Podolsk Agricultural Society, and private collections of members of the Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments. Since 1929, it has occupied one of the premises of the former Jesuit monastery, part of the
Mura historical and architectural complex. In 1944, the Nazis removed over 6,000 valuable items from the museum - almost half of the exposition - mostly items from ethnographic, archaeological and numismatic collections.
In the post-war years, several reconstructions of the museum took place. Now in its 20 halls with a total area of more than 2,000 square meters, more than 100,000 items are exhibited, among which is a unique collection of gold jewelry from the Bronze and Sarmatian periods. The museum has a library with 11,000 editions of the late XVIII - early. XXI centuries. The Art Museum of Vinnitsa is located in the same courtyard with the Museum of Local Lore. There is also a bronze monument to young Taras Shevchenko.
