Intercession Convent
Pokrovsky Monastery of Women
Ukraine, Vinnytsia
The Intercession Convent in Bar was erected in 1616 on the site of a wooden Carmelite monastery of the 16th century. During the War of Liberation of 1648-54 under the leadership of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, the monastery was destroyed, its stone buildings were partially preserved. By 1787, the main temple of the monastery was rebuilt in the Baroque style; in 1908, a three-tiered bell tower was built over the gate. In 1837, the Barsky Uniate Monastery became Orthodox, many pilgrims came here, especially on the temple feast of the Intercession of the Mother of God, to honor the icon of the Mother of God located here. In the 1930s the monastery was closed, the miraculous icon was hidden in the basement of the house where the nuns settled. Now the icon of the Mother of God is kept in the bar's Holy Dormition Cathedral. In 1992, the building of the Intercession Church was transferred to the Catholic community of the city of Bar.
