Nicholas Church in Kiliya
Church of St. Nicholas, Mykolaiv Church in Kіlії
Ukraine, Vylkove
Nicholas Church of the 15th century in the city of Kiliya is a rare type of church semi-underground structure in the country. The Turkish authorities forbade the Orthodox to build churches exceeding mosques in height, so the Church of St. Nicholas was deepened into the ground by 2.1 meters. Inside the church, built of hewn limestone, a staircase of seven steps leads. The church was repeatedly rebuilt, it was destroyed twice by the Turks. The brick three-tiered bell tower, with facades decorated in the style of Russian architecture of the 17th century, was added in 1891, after which the church took on a modern look. During the anti-religious struggle in the early sixties of the XX century, the church was turned into a warehouse for almost 30 years.
With the help of the Society for the Revival of the St. Nicholas Church, the restoration of the church began and on August 2, 1993, the first Divine Liturgy was held. The icon of the Mother of God of Jerusalem is preserved in the temple, there is a Sunday school, and services are accompanied by senior and junior church choirs.
