Ukraine, Trostianets
The Holy Intercession Cathedral in Akhtyrka is the main Orthodox church in the city, a monument of history and architecture of national importance. The Ukrainian baroque cathedral, designed by the famous architect V. Rastrelli, was built by architects S. Dudinsky and D. Ukhtomsky in 1768, on the site of the discovery of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Akhtyrka in 1739. The icon was stolen in 1903 in St. Petersburg during restoration. The ensemble of the cathedral includes the Vvedenskaya bell tower with a church on the ground floor, the Church of the Nativity of Christ and a chapel in honor of the acquisition of the Akhtyrskaya icon. During the Second World War, the cathedral was damaged, its restoration took place in 1970-72. In 1994, a shrine was transferred to the Intercession Cathedral - an old copy of the Akhtyrsky icon, taken out after the revolution in San Francisco.
