Tripillya village, Trypillia culture
Ukraine, Trypillia
The Trypillia culture is an archaeological culture named after the place of discovery near the village of Trypillia near Kyiv. It was distributed in the Eneolithic era on the territory of Ukraine to the west of the Dnieper and in Moldova, as well as in eastern Romania, where it is called the culture of Cucuteni (Cucuteni). The Trypillians were replaced by the Indo-European peoples of the Yamnaya culture. The origin of the culture is not determined; at the core are Neolithic tribes, among which a special role belonged to the carriers of the Bonn, Keresh cultures, linear-tape ceramics and the Bug-Dniester culture. The main branches of the economy are agriculture and cattle breeding. The first settlements of this archaeological culture, reflecting a certain level of development of society, were discovered by Vikentiy Khvoyka at the end of the 19th century near the village of Trypillya, Kiev province, from which the name originated. Trypillia culture is characterized by a high level of economic development and developed social relations. During the time of this culture, there was a significant increase in population density in the area of its distribution.. Tripolye villages were most often located on gentle slopes suitable for agriculture, near the water. Their area reached several tens of hectares. They consisted of several dozen ground-based adobe dwellings, separated by internal partitions. Part of the premises, which served for housing, was heated by stoves and had round windows, part was used as storage rooms. In such houses, communities, consisting of several families, probably lived. Pottery reached a high level. Trypillian ceramics occupied one of the first places in Europe of that time in terms of the perfection of dressing and painting. Three lines of ancient ramparts, the so-called "Zmievs", start from Trypillya, which stretch along both banks of the Stugna and along the Red River for a considerable distance to the northwest and west.
