Medobory is a nature reserve located in the east of the Ternopil region of Ukraine on the territory of the Husyatinsky and Podvolochysky districts. It was founded in 1990. The area of the reserve - 10,521 hectares, including 1,000 hectares - is the area of the Kremenetsky Gory branch, which is located in the Kremenetsky district in the north of the Ternopil region. In the 10th-13th centuries, the Zbruch cult center existed on the territory of the reserve, one of the last strongholds of paganism in Kievan Rus.

The administration of the reserve is located in the village of Grymailov, in the village of Gusyatin there is a museum of the reserve.

The reserve is located on the territory of a unique geological formation - Tovtr (Toltr), which is the remains of an ancient barrier reef that formed approximately 25 million years ago along the coastal part of the Sarmatian Sea. In our time, Tovtry is a range of hills, up to 414 m high (mountain Bohit), with frequent outcrops of rock.
Tovtry is a calcareous formation, therefore karst formations are not uncommon on the territory of the reserve. On the territory of the reserve there is a cave "Pearl" (Ukrainian Perlinna), so named for the presence of calcite balls on its walls, remotely similar to pearls.

About 93% of the reserve is covered with forests. The most common trees are oak (about 48% of the forest area), hornbeam (17%), ash (12%), beech, sycamore, maple, linden, cherry, elm, birch, pine and aspen are also found. Oak-hornbeam, hornbeam-oak, oak-hornbeam-ash, oak-beech forests, indigenous to this territory, have been preserved in places. According to a number of scientists, the easternmost beech grove in Europe is located in Medobory. Honey plants are present in large numbers, their abundance led to the appearance of the popular name of this area - Medobory. Steppe and rocky vegetation grows on treeless areas. Of the plants growing in the reserve, 29 species are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.

The fauna of the reserve is also very rich. There are deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox, marten, badger, elk.
For tourists, the staff of the reserve provides three routes. Two of them - on the mountains of Ostraya and Bohit - scientific and educational, the third - on the mountain "Forest of the Hermit" - for a wide range of tourists. Approximately 4,000 visitors pass these routes annually.

Of the interesting sights of the reserve, it is worth noting the geological exfoliation of the Tovtrova ridge in the Blind Yar, karst caves (including the Zhemchuzhnaya cave), mineral springs, pagan settlements near the mountains of Zvenigorod, Govda, Bohit, which were part of the Zbruch cult center. On the outskirts of the village of Vikna there are unique karst lakes in the form of watering cans that do not freeze even in winter.

Forest of the hermit.
According to legend, about 200-300 years ago, a hermit settled near a large rock in the middle of the forest. Rumor ascribes to him a noble origin, but in protest against injustice, he renounced the world. For many years he lived in the forest, carved a cell in the rock in which he prayed. According to legend, the hermit was killed and buried next to the cave in a stone niche. In the early 1990s, the memorial place was restored, and in our time, believers from the village of Krutilovo come here to celebrate the Trinity.

Cave "Pearl".

The cave was discovered in autumn 1969. The duration of horizontal passages is about 300 m, the maximum depth is 40 m. The air temperature is about 9 °C. Of the features of the cave - the presence of incrustations, stalactites and stalagmites, cave pearls. Read completely ↓
