Ternopil Pond is an artificial reservoir more than 3 km long, created in 1951 on the site of a wetland on the Seret River, until 1992 it was called "Komsomolskoye Lake". The first dam on the Seret was built in 1548, during the construction of
Ternopil Castle, by Jan Tarnovsky, the founder of Ternopil. In addition to protecting against the attacks of the Turks or Tatars, the pond was used for breeding fish, and four mills worked on it.
In the first half of the 20th century, the dam was destroyed, the reservoir became shallow and overgrown with silt. In the 1950s, a new, higher dam was built, the area of the pond increased to 300 hectares. A park named after Shevchenko was laid along the eastern shore of the lake, an artificial “island of lovers” with a gazebo was created in the pond, a hydropark was opened, new beaches were poured. Ternopil pond is a favorite place for walks among the townspeople.
