The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ternopil is one of the sights of the city. The temple in the late Baroque style with two three-tiered towers was built in 1749-79 on the site of an old Russian Orthodox church. After the transfer of the cathedral to the Dominican monks, a two-story private building of their monastery was built nearby. Between the temple and the cells, an inner Italian courtyard was arranged, which is a separate attraction worthy of attention.
During the battles for the liberation of Ternopil in April 1944, the church was significantly damaged, so the post-war restoration was completed only in 1957. In 1978-89 the church housed an art gallery. In 1989, the cathedral was transferred to the UGCC and received the name "Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Holy Theotokos." Inside the cathedral, there is a commemorative plaque dated 1778 in honor of the founder of the monastery, Joseph (Józef) Potocki. In 2004, a monument to Metropolitan Joseph Slipy was erected next to the cathedral, and in the square opposite, an equestrian
monument to Prince Daniel of Galicia.
