Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Ukraine, Ternopil
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the current temple of the Ternopil community of the UGCC. The Empire-style church was built in 1836 on the site of the wooden church of the Basilian Fathers, next to it in 1837 a bell tower with a dome was erected - quadrangular at the bottom, octagonal at the top. In 1931, Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky handed over the church to the Redemptorists, a Catholic male monastic association that preaches the Good News to the most disadvantaged people. The Redemptormists rebuilt the main building, built a new chapel, and ennobled the surrounding area.
The monastery church survived the Second World War, but was destroyed in 1962, along with the surrounding buildings. In 1991, the revival of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary began. On August 19, 1994, the consecration of a new church built in the eclectic style with elements of Byzantine architecture took place.
