Zarvanitsky Mari Spiritual Center
Zarvanitsky Mari Spiritual Center
Ukraine, Terebovl
The Mari Spiritual Center, the main shrine of Greek Catholics, is located on the Stripa River in Zarvanitsa. The monastery was founded near a healing spring, where, according to legend, a wandering wounded monk saw the icon of the Mother of God and was healed. At first, the icon was kept in a cave chapel, then in a wooden church, which has not been preserved - a stone cross was erected at this place. In 1754, a stone church of the Holy Trinity was built to store the icon of the Mother of God of Zarvanitskaya. In 1867, Pope Pius IX crowned the Zarvanitskaya icon, and the monastery became a major center of pilgrimage.
During the Soviet era, the monastery was destroyed, the source was fenced with barbed wire, but the locals managed to save the icon and worship continued to be held in secret. In 1991, the revival of the shrine began. The majestic Cathedral of the Zarvanitskaya Mother of God with a four-tiered bell tower 75 m high, the gate Annunciation Church, a chapel with a stele of the Mother of God above the spring and a singing field-amphitheater were erected.
