Assumption Cathedral
Assumption Cathedral
Ukraine, Sumy
The Assumption Cathedral was founded in 1759 at the expense of a local native of Luka Belous, archimandrite of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, as a cathedral church of the hundredth town of Mezhirich. The church is located on a terrace above the village, on the high right bank of the river. Psel, near the mulberry tree, which the Mezhirich Cossacks brought from Constantinople at the end of the 17th century and which grew into a huge tree. The construction of the temple, a monument of Ukrainian baroque architecture, was completed in 1775; the archimandrite laid the relics of ten saints in its foundation. In the 1930s, at the height of the struggle against religion, they wanted to destroy the cathedral, but when the bell was thrown down, one person crashed, falling from a height, so they decided not to touch the temple. During the war, during the bombing, the roof and the bell tower of the temple were destroyed. In the post-war period, the roof was restored, but the church itself requires a major overhaul.
