A two-tiered cathedral was erected in the city center, on the site of a wooden church. The first architect who designed the temple is unknown. From 1882 to 1892, under the leadership of Mikhail Lovtsov, a major reconstruction of the church was carried out. At the same time, a 56-meter bell tower was completed to the cathedral, on which chimes brought from England were installed. Sumy merchants Nikolai and Dmitry Sukhanov were patrons of the restoration work. Rumors, gossip and tragedy. The icon of the Mother of God of Korsun or Shpilevskaya (as it was called by the people) was the patroness of Sumy and was in the Transfiguration Cathedral for almost three hundred years.→
